Wine & cellar advice

Transporting Champagne on board a boat

Heat, the main risk

Heat is the main risk when storing Champagne on board. An unventilated hold or storage space can exceed 30°C in summer in the Mediterranean, a temperature that irreversibly accelerates the wine's evolution within a few hours of prolonged exposure.

A cooler with ice packs remains the most reliable solution for a day trip.

Vibrations and light

Contrary to popular belief, engine vibrations have a limited effect on wine intended for quick consumption (under 48 hours) — the actual impact of vibrations mainly concerns long-term cellaring, which is irrelevant for consumption on board. Direct light also degrades the wine, particularly in clear bottles; storing it away from sunlight, even at the correct temperature, remains necessary.

For a sea trip, planning the exact quantity required limits the risk of preserving improperly stored leftover bottles upon return.
