Creating a bespoke wine box: a sommelier's method
A successful gift set is not just a collection of bottles. It is a coherent selection that reflects the giver. Here is the method we apply.
Start with an intention
Before choosing the wines, define what the gift set should convey: thanks, regional roots, discovery, or a festive moment. This intention guides everything else.
Choose a common thread
A few examples of effective common threads:
- a region: a white and a red from Bourgogne or Provence;
- a contrast: a Northern wine and a Southern wine, a young wine and a more mature wine;
- a meal: a Champagne for the aperitif, a white for the starter, a red for the main course;
- a rarity: confidential appellations, forgotten grape varieties.
Balance the colors
A two-bottle gift box combining red and white, or Champagne and red, appeals to most people. A three-bottle gift box allows adding a Champagne or a rarer wine.
Pay attention to presentation
The presentation matters almost as much as the contents:
- a case or wooden box adapted to the number of bottles;
- a sheet for each wine: estate, appellations, grape varieties, pairings, ideal tasting window;
- a personalized card, handwritten or printed, signed by the company.
Consider the end recipient
A gift set delivered to an office must be easy to carry; a gift set sent to a residence must withstand shipping. For large volumes, consistency matters: all recipients at the same level receive the same gift box.
Add a gourmet touch
A few fine food items, selected to pair with the wines, complement a gift box well: regional olive oil, tapenade, biscuits. Pay attention to their shelf life and durability during transport.
